The Second President, H.E. Al Hajj Ali Hassan Mwinyi (1985 - 1995)

His Excellency Alhaj Ali Hassan Mwinyi, who led the Second Phase Government, officially assumed power on November 5, 1985. His Excellency Alhaj Ali Hassan Mwinyi was born in Kivule, Mkuranga, Coast Region on May 5, 1925.
Work
He was a primary school teacher in Mangapwani and Bumbwini, Zanzibar. Politically, Honorable Ali Hassan Mwinyi joined the Afro Shiraz Party (ASP) in 1964 and held various positions in the government of Zanzibar and the United Republic of Tanzania such as Secretary General, Ministry of Education Zanzibar 1963, Minister of State in the Office of the President of the United Republic of Tanzania in 1970 and between 1982 and 1983 he was Minister of Health, Ministry of Home Affairs, Natural Resources and Ambassador of the United Republic of Tanzania to Egypt. In 1984 he was elected President of Zanzibar and Vice President of the United Republic of Tanzania

Honorable Ali Hassan Mwinyi also holds a certificate of proficiency in the English language, which he graduated from Regent's College, England in 1960, and a certificate of proficiency in the Arabic language, which he graduated from, Cairo, Egypt, in 1972-74.
