The Fifth President, H.E. Dr. John Pombe Joseph Magufuli (2015 - 2021)

The late Dr. John P. Magufuli was born on October 29, 1959, in Chato District in Kagera Region, currently, Chato District is in Geita Region. He is married to Janet Magufuli, a primary school teacher, and is blessed with children.

Career Background

In 1995 he ventured into elective politics and was elected as a Member of Parliament (MP) for Chato. During his first term as MP, he was appointed as Deputy Minister for Works. In the 2000 General Election, he retained his seat as MP for Chato Constituency and was promoted to a full ministerial position under the same Ministry and from 2006 to 2008 as Minister of Lands and Human Settlement, from 2008 to 2010 as Minister of Livestock and Fisheries, subsequently, he served again as Minister of Works from 2010 to 2015.

Educational Background

He attained a Diploma in Education Science majoring in Chemistry, and Mathematics from 1981 to 1982 at Mkwawa College of Education. He pursued a Bachelor of Science in Education (Chemistry and Mathematics) from 1985 to 1988 at the University of Dar es Salaam. He attained his Master’s of Science in Chemistry from the same university and the University of Salford in the United Kingdom in 1994. Later he attained his Ph.D. in Chemistry from the University of Dar es Salaam, where he studied in  2006 to 2009.
