The Office of the Attorney General (OAG) of Tanzania (Ofisi ya Mwanasheria Mkuu wa Serikali) is established under Article 59 of the Constitution of the United Republic of Tanzania. It serves as the primary legal advisor to the government.
Core Functions & Services
The OAG is responsible for safeguarding public interest and maintaining the rule of law through several essential public services:
- Legal Advisory Services: Providing counsel to Ministries, Department Agencies (MDAs), and Local Government Authorities (LGAs).
- Legislative Drafting: Writing and reviewing proposed national bills and regulations.
- Contracts and Treaties: Drafting, vetting, and negotiating domestic agreements and international treaties on behalf of the state.
- Litigation and Dispute Resolution: Managing government arbitration and legal proceedings.
