The Tanzania Broadcasting Corporation has a very long history dating back to the time when Radio SAUTI YA DAR ES SALAAM was established on July 01, 1951, airing its broadcasts in Kiswahili once a week.
In 1955 the Dar es Salaam Sound based in Kichwele Street was changed to Tanganyika Broadcasting Services (TBS) and moved to Pugu Road, now Nyerere Road. TBS gained great popularity in the East African region thanks to its broadcasts, received news from Japan, Finland and New Zealand.
On 01 July, 1956 TBS changed to the Tanganyika Broadcasting Corporation (TBC). After efforts to fight for the independence of Tanganyika and the Union of Tanganyika and Zanzibar, TBC was renamed Radio Tanzania Dar es Salaam (RTD), on 01 July, 1965. RTD was used to inspire and educate on the Arusha Declaration and the politics of Socialism and Self-Reliance. It had three channels namely the National Channel, the Business Channel and the English External Services of Radio Tanzania Dar es Salaam.
In an effort to improve the quality of programmes and enhance broadcasting for government agencies, on June 12, 2004 the Tanzania Broadcasting Institute (TUT) was formed which merged Radio Tanzania Dar es Salaam with National Television (TVT). This helped to make these government broadcasting entities under the leadership and coordination of a single management.
With the intention of accelerating the intended changes within a short period of time, making it a public broadcasting corporation, TUT was renamed the Tanzania Broadcasting Corporation (TBC) with effect from July, 2007. This Tanzanian broadcasting corporation was officially launched by the Fourth Phase President of the United Republic of Tanzania H.E. Jakaya Mrisho Kikwete on March 26, 2008.
To reach the world broadly, TBC has greatly expanded its scope to inform, entertain, educate, reflect and sustain Tanzanian culture by increasing its media. TBC currently has three televisions that are TBC1 for all important events, this television its biggest stakeholders are adults. TBC2 which is specifically for young people and Tanzania Safari which focuses on all aspects of tourism, culture, traditions and our natural resources.
On the radio side we have TBC Nation, which, as in the case of TBC1, is specific to all national issues and is preferred more by adults. TBC International which broadcasts its broadcasts in English and BONGO FM which is specifically aimed at young people. TBC is also not far behind in the digital world. We have a TBC Digital Convergence unit that streams news, information, and other issues through Facebook, YouTube, Instagram and Tick Tok social networks.
